Sixty-five patients with small cell bronchogenic carcinoma were treated
with intensive induction chemotherapy and supportive treatment. The
clinical course of 43 patients who had pretreatment spirometry and arterial
blood gases was studied. Thirteen patients developed pneumonia. Moderate
hypoxemia, advanced age, and a low forced expiratory flow 25%-75% were
associated with the development of pneumonia. Endobronchial obstruction and
neutropenia, other factors associated with infection in cancer patients,
appeared to be less important in this patient population.
