In a previous editorial on the policing of clinical trials,1 George P. Canellos, MD, Editor-in-Chief, referred to the 1995 Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) publication of an article describing a trial of high-dose chemotherapy compared with conventional-dose therapy in metastatic breast cancer by Bezwoda et al.2 That article has been widely quoted in the medical literature and in the lay press. After the revelation of inconsistencies in data reported by Dr Bezwoda in another trial in high-risk breast cancer,3 an audit of the data published in the JCO in 1995 was conducted. The results of this audit are published as a Special Article in the current issue of the JCO. As a result of the findings of this audit, the Journal of Clinical Oncology is formally retracting the 1995 publication.
